The Banyan Tree on Maui, planted in 1873 by William Owen Smith
started out as one tree
THE BANYAN TREE
the frays
turned into these, they came from above and rooted themselves
and matured into these
and these so the story goes

Aren’t these amazing trees?!? They are so creature-like: serpentine, elephantine. I get lost in their meanderings, and I love saying the word “banyan”. What an awesome post 🙂

Is this the banyan in front of the Pioneer Inn? I haven’t seen it in ages.

I didn’t notice an Inn but the downstairs of the gift shop used to be a jail. Plus it’s near where all the water tour ticket sellers are.

Is there another tree like this on Maui?

Not sure. Haven’t been there in many years. Left there when I went to college on Oahu…decades ago. Have only been back to Maui to visit twice in that time.

Who says trees can’t move?! This one is definitely going places and spreading itself around. It feels so very much alive with an intelligence all its own…
